# Contact Status: Subscribed and Unsubscribed

Managing your contacts’ subscription preferences is essential for keeping your business account compliant with [__WhatsApp’s business messaging policies__](https://business.whatsapp.com/policy). It also helps ensure that you only send messages to people who actually want to hear from you.

If a contact does not want to receive notifications, you can mark them as **Unsubscribed**. Contacts marked as Unsubscribed will be automatically excluded from [Bulk Broadcast Notifications](https://help.wanotifier.com/en/article/what-are-notifications-1d65yat/).

### How to Update Contact Status

You can mark a contact as **Subscribed** or **Unsubscribed** in two ways:

* **Manually update the status** of an individual contact by opening their details in the Contacts page and changing their subscription status.

* **Allow contacts to update their own status** by letting them specify their preferences. To do this, you can use [__Basic Automations__](https://app.wanotifier.com/basic-automations/) and set up triggers with the **Unsubscribe and Re-subscribe options**. They will allow your contacts to manage their opt-in and opt-out preferences by sending phrases like “STOP” (to unsubscribe) or “RESTART” (to resubscribe) in response to your messages.

Now that you know how to update a contact’s status, let’s look at [__how to add new contacts manually__](https://help.wanotifier.com/en/article/how-to-add-contacts-manually-fy6sja/) in WANotifier.
