Create an Authentication Message Template

Authentication message templates enable businesses to verify a user’s identity at various stages of their customer journey by sending them a one-time password (OTP) for events like:

  • Account creation
  • Account login and password recovery
  • New or existing order or transaction confirmations

In this article, we’ll show you how to create these templates in WANotifier.

Step 1: Open the Message Templates Section

To get started, click Content Library in the left sidebar menu and select Message Templates from the dropdown.

Once you're in the Message Templates dashboard, click the Add New Message Template button in the top-right corner.

Step 2: Select Category and Language

On the Add a Template screen:

  • Enter a template name. This will be used to save and identify your template within WANotifier.
  • Choose Authentication as the template category.
  • Select a language for your message. See the list of supported languages.

Step 3: Choose a Code Delivery Setup

This setting allows you to determine how the code will be delivered to the end user and how they will interact with it. You have three options to choose from:

  • Zero-tap autofill: This option allows your users to receive one-time passwords or codes via WhatsApp without leaving your website or app. An autofill or copy code message will be sent if zero-tap and autofill aren’t possible.

  • One-tap autofill: This option lets you send a one-time password or code with a one-tap autofill button. When the user taps the button, WhatsApp opens your app and passes the code to it automatically. A copy code message will be sent if autofill isn’t possible.

  • Copy code: This option lets you send a one-time password or code with a copy button. When the user taps it, the code is copied to their clipboard so they can paste it into your website or app. This option is best for most use cases.

Step 4: Configure App Setup (Optional)

If you have not selected the One-tap autofill code delivery option earlier and are not setting this up for a mobile app, you can skip this step. But if you selected the option, you’ll see additional fields to enter your app details. These are required so that WhatsApp can pass the OTP directly to your app and enable auto-login.

If you have an app and want to support this functionality, fill in the values shown in this setup.

Step 5: Configure Additional Content Options

The Content section allows you to add two types of additional content to your authentication template:

  • Security recommendations:  This option inserts a sentence advising users not to share the verification code with anyone.
  • Expiry timings for verification codes: This option enables a timer for the verification code’s expiry, which you can set between 1 and 90 minutes.

Important: Aside from these two options, you can’t add any other content to an authentication message template.

Step 6: Add Button

When you choose a code delivery option, like One-tap autofill or Copy Code, a new button is added automatically to your template for getting the code. You can customize the default text for this button, but make sure it's no longer than 25 characters.

You can also add an Autofill CTA button for the Zero-tap code delivery option if needed.

Step 7: Preview and Submit

While editing your Authentication Message, we suggest you use the Template Preview tab to see how your message will appear to recipients.

Once you're satisfied with your message, click Submit to send it for WhatsApp's approval. The review process usually takes a few minutes, but in some cases, it may take up to 24 hours.

Now that you know how to create different types of message templates in WANotifier, let’s go over the guidelines to help you create templates that meet WhatsApp’s requirements.
