WhatsApp Drip Sequences Setup Guide
WhatsApp Drip Sequences let you send a series of pre-scheduled messages over time to onboard, nurture, or re-engage your contacts.
They’re useful for a variety of purposes, such as:
- Onboarding new subscribers with a sequence of helpful tips.
- Delivering product tutorials or training in multiple messages over several days.
- Sending exclusive offers to re-engage inactive customers.
- Sensing reminders for events, subscription renewals, or incomplete purchases.
In this article, we’ll show you how to set up a WhatsApp drip sequence to support these use cases.
Step 1: Create a New Drip Sequence
- Go to Automations in the left sidebar menu and select Drip Sequences from the drop-down.
- Once you’re on the Drip Sequences screen, click on the Add New Drip Sequence button in the top-right corner.
Step 2: Select a Drip Name
In the Add Drip Sequence screen, enter a name for your sequence under Drip Name.
Step 3: Set Start Condition
Next, define when your drip sequence should start. Note that you can trigger a sequence when:
A contact is added to or removed from a list
For example, by adding a contact to your “New Signups” list, you can automatically trigger a welcome drip sequence.
A tag is added to or removed from a contact
For example, by adding a “needs nurturing” tag to inactive leads, you can trigger a series of follow-up messages automatically.
A custom attribute meets a specific condition, such as:
- Equals a value (e.g., “City” equals “New Delhi”)
- Does not equal a value (e.g., “Plan” does not equal “free”)
- Contains a value (e.g., “Lead source” contains “sale”)
- Starts with a value (e.g., email starts with hello@)
- Ends with a value (e.g., email ends with .edu)
Note that you can configure more than one start condition for each drip sequence.
Step 4: Set Stop Condition (optional)
Similar to the start condition, you can set a Stop Condition to end the drip sequence session automatically when specific criteria are met.
Step 5: Allow running sequence multiple times
You can enable this toggle to allow the same contact to enter this drip sequence again.
Step 6: Add Messages to Your Drip Sequence
In the Drip Message Sequence section, click on the Add New + button to add the number of messages you want to include in your sequence.
Then, click on the Edit icon in each message to:
- Select a Message Template - Select a message template you want to send. If the template contains variables, assign primary and fallback values to them.
- Set a "Send After" Interval - Set the time interval for when the message should be sent. It’s important to note that:
- The time interval for the first message is based on when the start condition is met.
- The time intervals for subsequent messages are calculated from when the last message was sent.
- You can set intervals in minutes, hours, or days.
- Set delivery preferences -You can enable this to see additional timing options:
- You can choose the days of the week on which the message should be sent. This option is useful if you do not want to send messages on days like Saturday and Sunday.
- You can also set a preferred delivery time. The message can be delivered anytime or only within a specific time range.
- Click on the Save button to save the settings and close the pop-up.
Similarly, you can add as many messages as you like to the drip sequence. Once you’ve added all your messages, move on to the next step.
Step 7: Activate and Save Your Drip Sequence
- Once you’ve completed your setup, click on the Save button in the Actions section to save your sequence.
- If you want to activate this sequence, enable the status toggle at the top left and save again.
By following these steps, you’ll be able to create and send drip sequences based on how a contact’s details change.
